GRATITUDES + BREAKTHROUGHS // MARCH 13, 2018
Gratitudes
Let me just say that my highlight of the week was working inside of Common Room in Alexandria! Alicia Bruce of The Alicia Bruce booked the room for us last week, but if you remember we were getting hit with Windmageddon – like hard. So we were able to reschedule for this past Friday and this space was absolutely adorable and perfect! There were a few designed spaces with plenty of white walls and natural light. Their vibe was bright and inspirational! I was able to shoot some new headshots for Alicia as well as some new images of my wedding albums for clients and a few styled flat lays! Alicia also was kind enough to take a few snaps of my mug so I’ll be sharing those with you soon! If you need a space to hold a meeting, update your headshots or just want a new working environment, definitely check out Common Room!
Saturday morning I hopped over to Curious Fox Press to help photograph a new set of semi-custom invitations she put together with Leah Letters for the Visit Loudoun event at Shadow Creek Weddings and Events. Cathleen is an amazing artist and letterpressman (I’m not sure letterpressman is a correct title, but go with it.) Her studio in her basement is filled with massive antique presses, my two favorite being Fat April and Pearl. Each named to follow their unique personality. Cathleen welcomed me into her home early on Saturday with homemade scones and coffee, which to me is incredible considering she runs a business, has two children and a husband. I’m not sure how she has the time for that or the energy. I was tired from having to share my bed with the pups, and I definitely had to borrow a gallon of gas from them because I wildly underestimated how close the nearest gas station was. Cathleen, you’re impressive!
After my visit with Cathleen I went over to my parents to start a project my family has been avoiding for approximately 10 years. We needed to clean out the garage, especially with my furniture coming back home. Together we shuffled furniture opened boxes, created a few piles and started going through our things. Over the years we’ve collected items from 4 universities, one grandparent’s house, one uncles home and various antique pieces I’ve picked up along the way. Like the road trip I made to Brooklyn, New York last year to get vintage pieces from my friends Grandmother. So in all we donated a truck load, trashed a truck load, and sold a truck load. This weekend I’ll start moving my big pieces from my apartment so it can be safely stored until my next home. It was fun going through the boxes and see what treasures were held in there for so long. Some pieces were fun like a disposable camera that still had 7 shots left, so we obviously took them. Others not so much, like college pots and pans that were probably 20 years old.
With this move comes a new schedule and I’m working on getting adjusted. I shifted my schedule at the winery so it’s consistent. I’ll be working there on Tuesdays and Thursdays for most of the day. So if you’re in the area come out and see me!
I ended up going back to a recent favorite for this week. I know you’ve read about the OPI Iceland collection and I’ve been obsessed over their light mauve since November. I wanted something classic for my session at Common Room so I’ll Have A Gin + Tectonic was the perfect choice.
Breakthroughs
Anyone else have emotional attachments to clothes? As I was packing up my bedroom and going through my clothes I noticed when I wanted to get rid of something I struggled if there was a memory attached to it. Some of these items were t-shirts, skirts and dresses bought for a special occasion. When I say special occasion I don’t mean a black tie event or something with a similar title. I mean things like a really nice date, an outfit I bought to impress a client, a visit to a restaurant I’d been dying to try, the dress I bought to go to my Grandma Ruthie’s funeral, or a maxi dress I bought to run along the Amalfi Coast etc. These events in life that end up having a significant meaning. As I was selecting what to keep and what to donate, those pieces that got donated I held on to a little bit longer to remember why I bought the piece and to really feel what it was like to wear it. It’s sort of magical that clothes hold a special memory. At the end of my purging I donated 2 bags of clothes and 1 bag of shoes. I’m hopeful that someone else somewhere will also make a few important memories in those pieces.
As always, thanks for reading. xoxo.
